Step 2.3 Draw Links

  1. Select the link tool and draw the street segments in the network. The link tool draws one-way links, unless the Ctrl key is pressed while it is being used. Since all streets in this example are two-way streets, we will save time by drawing two-way links. (Optionally, the user can select the Draw Two-way Link option for the node tool before placing nodes, and the links will be drawn automatically as the nodes are placed. See Step 3.1 of Chapter 3, Section 3.2 for more information on this option.)

  2. Place the cursor over a node until the center of the node is highlighted by a small square. Press and hold the Ctrl key, then click once to anchor one end of the link to that node.

  3. Continue to hold the Ctrl key, move the cursor to an adjacent node, and notice that the link is drawn and stretches with the location of the cursor. When the center of the second node is highlighted, clicking once will anchor the other end of the link and allow you to draw another link starting from that node; clicking twice will anchor the other end of the link and turn the link tool off. If necessary you can press the Esc key to cancel the link currently being drawn and turn off the link tool.

  4. While still holding the Ctrl key, continue drawing links by moving from node to node and clicking once; or if you double-clicked to anchor the second end of the previous link, then move to a new node and click once to start the process again. Continue until all links have been drawn.
