If the arterial level of service analysis procedures of the HCM are to be performed, this step is required to define the routes and enter the basic parameters needed by those procedures. In this step we will define a two-way route along State Hwy. One.
Switch to the Edit Routes mode by clicking the
button. The route data control panel will be displayed above the network window.
First click the Add Route button (no route information can be entered until a route has been added to the database).
Enter a name for the route in the Name field. For this example, enter “Highway One”.
Select the Direction of the route. For a one-way route, select North, South, East, or West for northbound, southbound, etc. For a two-way route, select North-South to have the northbound direction reported first, or select South-North to have the southbound direction reported first, etc.
Since this will be a two-way route, select “North-South”.
(If a one-way direction is selected, only links in one direction may be included in the route; if links in both directions are included, an error message will be generated when the user tries to go on to the next route or when leaving the Edit Routes mode. If you can’t figure out what is wrong with the route you have drawn, simply delete it with the “Delete Route” button and re-draw it.)
Select the analysis Method to be used. For this example, select “Operations”.
Select Yes in the Evaluate? field to include this route in the output reports.
If the Planning methodology is used, you would click the Edit Route Plan Data button to enter the information required by that method.
Routes are drawn by selecting the nodes and links to form the route, then identifying the route start and route end, and identifying the route segments and/or sections.
Selection is done by pointing to the item and using the Shift-LeftClick keystroke, or by using the Shift-LeftClick-Drag combination to surround one or more items with the marquee box. The item will change color to indicate that it has been selected. Unselect items using Shift-LeftClick keystroke again, or by using Ctrl-LeftClick-Drag combination to again surround one or more items with the marquee box.
For this example, while holding the Shift key, click the left mouse button and drag to draw a marquee box which includes the length of Highway One from Node 5 to Node 6. Release the shift key and the mouse button. The route should now be highlighted to indicate selection. If other items are accidentally selected in this process (e.g., links, nodes, text fields), simply unselect them by clicking them once using the left mouse button.
Specify the route start by placing the cursor over the start intersection (Node 12) and using Ctrl-Shift-RightClick. This keystroke sequence is used to specify four route markers. The first click indicates the route start. The second click is the route end. The third click is a route segment, and the fourth click is a route section. You can confirm that you are specifying the correct item by watching the item selection line below the lower left corner of the network window. The intersection icon will also change color with each click. No color means the intersection has not been identified with any of the four items.
The keystroke technique described above for specifying route markers works at all nodes, including cross-street nodes. At intersection nodes, the route markers can also be set by pointing to the intersection and using RightClick. This brings up the intersection pop-up menu, which includes the Route Marker option. Choose the desired route marker from this menu.
Specify the route end by pointing to the end intersection (Node 8) and use Ctrl-Shift-RightClick, until the Route End marker is shown on the item selection line.
Enter/Edit link data for both directions of all links along the route. Point to a link and RightClick. This will bring up a dialog box for entry/editing of link data, including link lengths, arterial class, speeds, and delays.
(For more information on entering these data and using the Arterial Analysis methodology, see the HCM and Chapters 14 and 22 of this manual.
When finished with this route, other routes can be similarly defined after first clicking the Add Route button.
When all routes have been entered, save your work.
